HTML Validation HTML Validation

What is an HTML Validator?

We provide an HTML validator. As you probably know, most web pages are written in one of many different computer languages such as HTML, XHTML, MathML, SMIL etc. This language specifies, to the web browser, what the page should look like and what appearance, style and functionality it should have.

Each computer language, like any spoken language, has it’s own set of rules regarding vocabulary, syntax and grammar. And, as such, web pages written in any computer language has a set of such rules that it should obey.

What this validator does is look at the page that you are showing it and checks to see what language it has been written in, and then checks every part of the page to see if it confirms to the set of language rules that it is supposed to. It will then display a list of instances where we think the rules have not been followed.

HTML Validation

We also mark those errors that we think are serious errors and are likely to be causing a problem to web browsers trying to read your code as ‘warnings’.

If I pass does this mean my web page is good?

No, this does not give any kind of quality control. It just tells you whether the rules of the language your programmer has used have been followed correctly. However, it is fair to say, that if your web page code is full of errors, it is unlikely to be well-understood by web browsers and therefore is more likely to have the content misread, or overlooked.

Why should I use this?

Your web page may appear to load in your browser just perfectly. However, with errors in your programming language you are relying on each browser (and don’t forget there are many different web browsers and many different versions of each) to guess or infer exactly what the language is trying to say to it. Of course, the more errors, and the seriousness of these errors will increase the chances of browsers, and,of course, search engine robots, t o misunderstand parts or all of your web page.
